abstract = "Studies on the natural dynamics and the environmental
vulnerability of a river basin make possible an analysis of the
variation of the space and the elements of the hydrological
regime. In this way, this study aims to analyze the physiographic
characteristics of the Rio de Janeiro Basin from the use of
geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques. To perform the
physiographic aspects of the Rio de Janeiro Basin, a Shuttle Radar
Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (MDE) was used
to obtain the following physiographic characteristics: area,
perimeter, total length of All channels, channel hierarchy, form
factor, compactness coefficient, drainage density, altimetry and
slope. The results show that the Rio de Janeiro Basin is not
susceptible to flooding due to its elongated shape, it has many
branches, because it is a 5th order basin, with several springs in
low slope and high altimetry locations, characterized by rocks Of
the Urucuia Group. The elevation and relief variation is
significant in the eastern portion of the basin, where the highest
slopes occurring by the mountain formation occur, which may cause
a higher velocity and peak runoff. This analysis allowed to detail
and individualize the physiographic characteristics of the Rio de
Janeiro Basin at more detailed categorical levels and the
generation of thematic maps, showing that the geoprocessing is an
efficient tool for the analysis of the physiographic aspects of
                         watersheds.",
